25 Years of Heart: Sandra Soza’s Journey

For Sandra Soza, Desert de Oro Foods (DDO) has never been just a job. It’s been the place where she learned English, built a career, raised her family and discovered just how far hard work can take her.

Now, after 25 years with DDO, Sandra’s story stands as a powerful example of resilience and dedication.

“When I talk about my history and where I came from, that’s when I start inspiring people.”

A New Beginning

Sandra moved to the U.S. from Chihuahua, Mexico at 22 years old. After briefly living in El Paso, TX, she relocated to Phoenix, AZ to be closer to family. Soon after, she landed her first job at Taco Bell through a connection of her sister’s. It was also her first chance to learn English.

At first, Sandra made tacos and burritos in the kitchen. But one day, a team member responsible for taking customer orders didn’t show up, so Sandra stepped in. That willingness to jump in and learn would shape the next chapter of her career.

Growing Through Opportunity

Sandra quickly earned a reputation for being dependable and hardworking. Within a few years, she was promoted into leadership roles and eventually became an opening Shift Leader, working the highly sought-after Monday through Friday schedule.

As her confidence grew, so did the opportunities around her.

A major turning point came when Sandra began working under then Regional Director Jeff Maestas, who continuously pushed her to believe in herself and take on new challenges.

“He doesn’t take no for an answer,” Sandra laughs. “He always pushed me to do more.”

Even when Sandra doubted herself, her leaders saw potential. When an Area Coach (AC) position opened up, Sandra initially hesitated to apply, but her leadership team encouraged her every step of the way.

“They believed in me before I believed in myself,” she says.

Today, Sandra serves as an AC overseeing seven Taco Bells in Phoenix.

Building Careers & Connections

Sandra says one of the most rewarding parts of her role is helping others see what’s possible for their own futures.

Many of the team members she works with are immigrants who relate to her journey and look to her as proof that growth is achievable.

She takes pride in building strong relationships and creating an environment where her crew feels supported both personally and professionally.

A Company That Shows Up

While Sandra has dedicated 25 years to DDO, she says the company’s also been there for her through some of life’s hardest moments.

Over the years, Sandra experienced the loss of her parents and brother. Most recently, her son left for the Navy. Through every season, she says DDO supported her with compassion and understanding.

“DDO has always been with me in the hardest moments in my life.”

Whether it was allowing her extra time to grieve with family or accommodating important moments with her children, Sandra says those experiences are a big reason she has remained with the company for so long.

“Job is going to be here when you come back,” she recalls being told during one difficult season. “That meant a lot to me.”

And Sandra, you mean a lot to us! We’re proud to have become a place that’s given driven and dependable people like Sandra a safe, supportive place to grow, learn and thrive.
