From working as an Arby’s crew member in his teens to his current role as Desert De Oro Food’s (DDO) Manager of Field IT, Derek Petersen brings a wealth of industry knowledge that’s made a big impact on our business. Although he joined the team just two years ago, Derek has already proven to be an invaluable addition.
We sat down with Derek to learn a bit more about how he got to where he is now.
A NEW BEGINNING
Derek landed in the IT world a bit unexpectedly. After a number of years working in restaurants, he was offered a position in the IT department of a previous employer — and although he didn’t have any professional IT experience, he jumped at the opportunity.
His willingness to take a chance paid off. Soon, Derek was ready for an even bigger change — which is when he became interested in working for DDO. Luckily, the feeling was mutual!
DDO STANDS OUT
Derek shares that in his initial interviews with us, he was introduced to multiple DDO employees who had been with the company for as long as 10, 20 and even 30 years — making it clear to him that we invest in our people.
“A lot of companies will say there are growth opportunities. But with DDO, you actually see it.” – Derek Petersen, Manager of Field IT
His offer letter sealed the deal, as it was given to him directly by DDO’s President of Development & Operations, Chad Burge. This direct contact with leadership throughout the interview process is what really differentiates DDO from other companies, Derek says. It was clear to Derek that we wanted him on the team.
SUN. SAND. SUCCESS.
It’s safe to say that Derek has delivered during his short time with us. He was one of the recipients of this year’s Estrellas de Oro celebration: Our all-expenses-paid trip to Cabo, Mexico for high performers. “This trip shows that the hard work you do on a day-to-day basis isn’t going unrecognized,” Derek shares.
Derek’s advice for DDO employees who want to be on the Estrellas de Oro roster for next year?
“Don’t stop pushing. It’s worth it,” he says.
WHAT’S NEXT
Derek is enjoying his current role, but knows that’s not where his journey with us ends. All aspects of the QSR business interest him, and he’s looking to be as involved with DDO as possible going forward.
“Everybody that works for DDO is very open to talking about what they do,” he says when we asked about the ability to explore other areas of the company. “I’m confident that with Desert De Oro, I can make my own path.”
